Common Rabbit Myths

Myth #1Rabbits can live on just carrots, lettuce, and cabbage.  Most people that don't have a rabbit think this is true.

The Truth:  A rabbit can not live on just carrots, lettuce, and cabbage because it needs a balanced diet, like people.  A rabbit cannot survive on just those 3 items; because one has a lot of sugar, one is almost all water, and cabbage is not good for them.

Myth #2 All  treats from pet stores are healthy. The

Truth:  Almost all rabbit feeds have a lot of sweetened fruits and nuts that are not needed  in the feed. The treats will make your  rabbit fat and cause digestive problems. If  you feed your rabbit a treat every day,  it's like feeding a person junk food everyday.

Myth #3 Baby rabbits can go to an owner by 3 or 4 weeks old because they are eating some solid food and are ready to be away from mom.

The Truth: A baby rabbit, when it is only three or four weeks old, still needs it's mother's rich milk.  Even though it is nibbling on solid foods a rabbit needs to be with mom until 6-8 weeks. If you give them away to young they will be whinining a lot and could lead to serious problems later.

Myth #4 Rabbits don't make noise.

The Truth:  Bunnies make a wide variety of noise.  The most common noise is purring,  kind of like a buzzing noise.   Sometimes screaming, because they are scared.
